Trifari is one of the most iconic brands of vintage costume jewelry. The company was founded in 1910 by Gustavo Trifari, an Italian immigrant who had a passion for jewelry making. Trifari quickly became known for its high-quality, innovative designs, and its pieces were soon worn by celebrities and fashion icons around the world.
Trifari's jewelry was inspired by the latest fashion trends, and the company was always at the forefront of design. In the 1920s, Trifari's jewelry was influenced by Art Deco, with geometric shapes and bold colors. In the 1930s, the company began to use more pastel colors and floral motifs. And in the 1940s and 1950s, Trifari's jewelry became more sophisticated and glamorous, with pieces that featured rhinestones, pearls, and other precious stones.
Chief designer Alfred Philippe (Alfred Philippe) is the driving force behind the popularity of Trifari jewelry and the reason why it can be collected today. He came to Trifari in 1930 after working for the well-known fine jewelry companies Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels. During Philippe's tenure at these companies, he developed the invisible stone setting and brought this high-end technology to Trifari. Philippe familiarizes other Trifari designers with exquisite jewelry design and manufacturing methods. The name "Trifari Alfred Philippe" has been known for nearly 40 years. Phillippe served as the chief designer of Trifari until 1968.
Alfred Philippe introduced many high-profile jewelry designs. His crown Trifari brooch ruled from the late 1930s to the 1950s. The Crown Trifari brooch is enhanced with colorful cabochons or dazzling transparent rhinestones. Crown Trifari jewelry became so popular that Trifari added a crown to its logo sometime around 1937.
Trifari was very diligent about signing all of their jewelry, often publishing ads in their fashion magazines informing customers that "If it isn’t signed, it isn’t Trifari". When you are looking to buy Trifari jewelry, always look for the Trifari hallmark. You may discover some slight variations on the stamps, but if the piece is genuine, it should contain a stamp.
